Season 5 of Pocoyo opens Animaj’s new era, with Guillermo García Carsí back as director. The music for its second half, episodes 27 to 52 (from “Here’s Bea” to “Pocoyo Rolls”), is entirely by Reseda Estudio: Tomás Virgós, Pablo Serrano and Antón Serrats. These episodes introduce Bea, Pocoyo’s little sister; the characters talk more than ever, the stories get longer and Stephen Fry returns as narrator.

Pocoyo has grown up, and so has the music. He now leaves the white background and travels to other worlds, and each one asks for its own music: there’s a bit of everything, with real aesthetic ambition and without talking down to anyone. Bea sounds like a tiny bell, but when she grows bold the orchestra comes in behind her. In one episode she enters a DJ-bird contest and music becomes the subject of the episode; her creative block in front of the synthesiser felt very familiar.

The commitment was total. Much of it was recorded organically, watching the animation on screen, composing and improvising over the movements to find the emotion of each scene. With an added pleasure: spending the whole process listening almost exclusively to Stephen Fry’s voice.
